Chris said softly, with great regret, 'Where do you want it, Ace? Arm or leg? I can't decide. You decide for me.'
And Ace stopped.
His face fell and I saw sudden terror in it. It wasn't Chris's words, I think, it was the way he spoke them - the real regret that things were going from bad to worse.
'Stay with me, Gordie,' Chris said in a low, shaky voice, 'Stay with me, man.'
